🔥 Turkey Cooking Safety
Deep-frying a turkey? Read this first!
🟠 Fry outdoors only — on a flat, non-combustible surface, away from anything that can burn.
🟠 Thaw and dry completely before frying — ice + hot oil = explosion risk.
🟠 Never overfill with oil. Follow the manufacturer’s fill line.
🟠 Turn off the burner before lowering the turkey into the fryer.
🟠 Keep kids and pets at least 3 feet away.
🟠 Have a Class K or ABC extinguisher nearby — never use water.
🟢 Safer option: use an oil-less electric fryer or bake the turkey.
🍳 Kitchen Fire Safety
Most Thanksgiving fires start in the kitchen — stay alert!
🟡 Stay in the kitchen while cooking.
🟡 Keep towels, packaging, and décor away from heat.
🟡 Wear short or fitted sleeves to avoid clothing catching fire.
🟡 Turn pot handles inward to prevent burns.
🟡 Keep a lid nearby to smother small pan fires.
🟡 Plug cooking appliances directly into wall outlets — no extension cords.
🕯️ Decorations & Candles
A cozy glow shouldn’t turn into a fire.
🟣 Use flameless candles when possible.
🟣 Keep open flames away from curtains, décor, and kids.
🚨 Smoke Alarms & Emergency Prep
Seconds count in an emergency.
🔵 Test smoke alarms before Thanksgiving Day.
🔵 Install alarms on every level and near bedrooms.
🔵 Make sure everyone knows two ways out of each room.
🔵 Learn the PASS method for fire extinguishers:
PULL – AIM – SQUEEZE – SWEEP
🚒 If a Fire Starts
Act fast — stay safe.
🔴 Oven fire: Turn off the oven, keep the door closed.
🔴 Stovetop fire: Turn off the burner, cover with a lid — never water.
🔴 If the fire spreads: Get out, close doors, and call 911 from outside.
🔴Buy a fire blanket and keep it nearby when you’re cooking. A blanket rated for kitchen fires is best!
🧯 Remember: Thanksgiving is the #1 day for home cooking fires.
A few safety steps can protect your home, your family, and your holiday.
